Governance Review Service
The key to surviving a recession
Effective governance should be at the heart of every third sector organisation, but this isn't always the case. Only 40%* of ACEVO members say their boards are highly effective in developing and reviewing strategy. But 70%* agree that improving governance should be a priority for the sector. In the current economic climate, a solid board will protect the organisation by planning for a turbulent future.
Why review your governance?
A governance review can offer a number of benefits to any third sector organisation.
It can help to:
- Identify both strengths and weaknesses
- Formulate a development plan
- Set a benchmark to measure future improvement
- Identify any skills gaps for further recruitment
It is also a good opportunity to encourage teamwork and engage all board members in improving governance performance.
The Code of Good Governance**, produced by a range of leading third sector groups, including ACEVO recommends that:
"The Board should ensure that at least every two years, it sets aside time to reflect on its own performance and functioning as a team."
"The results of these appraisals should be used to make necessary changes and improvements, to inform the creation of appropriate training programmes, and to guide Board Member renewal and recruitment."
ACEVO's governance review service - Power up your board
ACEVO has drawn on the Code of Good Governance** to develop a governance review service - Power up your board - to help CEOs and Chairs review and then improve the governance of the board.
What does the service provide?
This prompt service is comprised of an initial consultation, an online assessment, and a practical feedback session, providing full anonymous, qualitative and quantitative reports on each assessment
It uses sample criteria for each category, based on "Good Governance: A Code for the Voluntary and Community Sector" and ACEVO research.
